Short History

According to ancient legends; Ephesus (Ephesus), known as Amazon, was founded by female warriors. Its name is thought to come from Apasas, a city in the Arzawa kingdom that means the city of Mother Goddess. The Carians and the Leleges were probably among the first inhabitants of the city. According to the myth, the city was founded by Androchlos, the son of Kodrosus, the king of Athens, for the second time on the shore of the Kayster River, where they were guided by a fish and wild boar on the advice of the priests. On the other hand, archaeological data indicate that local people lived in the region until the end of the 2nd millennium BC. This is probably the city of Apasa, the capital of Arzawa, which can be matched with the Ayasuluk Hill in the Hittite sources. If this assumption is true, we should expect a regional power that is in close contact with the Hittite Empire, although there is no mention of the Aegean, Mycenaean and Cretan influences. There is an observable increase in Greek influence in 100 BC and later. It is very likely that the first colonists from the Greek island were settled in the region called Ionia (Ionian) today along the eastern coast of the Aegean Sea.

Being a gate between East and West, Efes was also an important port city. This feature made Ephesus an important trade and political center at that time. It was included in the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2015.
